While thinking about my annual forecast for custom home design trends, the word consistency kept coming to my mind. In the last couple of years, and I suspect the same will be true for 2023, the way space is being utilized in custom home design seems to be holding true. No matter the location and region of the projects I’m working on, full service or virtual consultations, today the spaces, amenities and symmetrical layouts clients want in their custom homes are relatively consistent from project to project.

That’s exactly what happened at the Timbre Heights Project, a new custom home located in Austin, Texas. To keep square footage down for an already large home, it became important to find a place for a small, secondary home office within the footprint of the floor plan that was being developed.

I remember years ago when I was teaching a corporate design class at CSU, Chico we traced the origin and the development of telecommuting and home offices in the US. The research was fascinating. I found it intriguing how advancements in technology coincided with social events, and environmental concerns in a way that not only was it possible for someone to efficiently work from home but it also became necessary.

While the house was under construction, I made furniture selections for our study and designed board-and-batten wall paneling that was recently installed. Although the Mount Valley Project, a large semi-custom, new build in Utah had plenty of square footage, in many of the rooms I had to do some finagling to design them in a way that would give the clients what they were hoping for, for each of the spaces.
