DO YOU PREPARE STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS?

Mostly, no. Because I’m an interior designer, structural issues are outside of my area of expertise. However, under the direction of a contractor, I can prepare simple structural drawings that don’t require engineering and are intended only for obtaining a building permit. Otherwise, we rely on structural experts, like engineers and architects, for that portion of the project.

ARE YOU AN ARCHITECT?

No, I’m not an architect. An architect’s training extends to include exterior design and structural needs, while my training focuses on the location of interior walls. There is, however, some cross-over between what architects and interior designers do.

An interior designer’s focus is primarily the interior architecture of the space—the design of the floor plans, elevations, etc. A skilled designer creates space that is functional, has proper adjacencies, flows appropriately, and is safe for occupants. Once the design of the interior architecture is in place, a designer than specifies colors and finish materials that fit the aesthetic and needs of the space.

DO YOU WORK ALONE?

I do all the spatial design work and finish material selections myself, however there are a few different interior designers that I call upon when I need to move projects along quickly. They are all skilled, experienced and talented designers with bachelor’s degrees in interior design. They help, when needed, with site measurements, CAD drawings, sourcing finish materials, furnishings and accessories.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED AN ARCHITECT OR INTERIOR DESIGNER FOR MY PROJECT?

It all depends on the scope of your project. Often, I work with a team of design experts, which includes an architect or structural engineer, and we each bring our specialty and expertise to the project. However, not all projects warrant the need for a design team. If you’re not sure whether your project needs a design team, let’s find a time to chat and I can help direct you.

WHAT DO YOU CHARGE?

Because every project is unique and varies greatly in scope, my design fees are based on an hourly rate. I also charge a trip fee for any travel that exceeds forty minutes round-trip from my Rocklin, CA design studio.

Though a financial investment, the fees are generally a fraction of the overall project cost and will help you achieve a well-designed, beautiful space while avoiding costly mistakes.

DO YOU OFFER A COMPLIMENTARY CONSULTATION?

I offer a complimentary phone consult to answer any questions and discuss the scope of your project. Our first on-site or in-studio appointment is billed at the same hourly rate as all other work.

DO YOU WORK ON PROJECTS OUTSIDE YOUR IMMEDIATE AREA?

While most of my projects are within a two-hour drive from the Sacramento area, I do have out-of-state projects as well. No matter their location, clients receive the same quality and service.

DO YOU HAVE CONTRACTORS THAT YOU WORK WITH OR RECOMMEND?

Yes. There are several local contractors and sub-contractors that I’ve worked with repeatedly over the years that I would highly recommend. Otherwise, I’m happy to work with the contractor(s) of your choosing.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

While I have my own personal style, my job is to not impose it on your design. Rather, I work with you to design a space that reflects your personal style and taste.
